Dietary potassium linked to lower BP

While decreasing sodium intake is necessary to lower blood pressure, increasing dietary potassium has the same effect according to McDonough. Hypertension affects more than a billion people worldwide according to WHO. The World Health Organization estimates that at least 51 percent of deaths due to stroke and 45 percent of deaths due to heart disease is the direct result of hypertension. McDonough has studied the link between blood pressure and dietary sodium, potassium and the sodium-potassium ratio.
